About the Newsletter
This newsletter has two parts: the first part consists of a brief update on what our FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition team has been doing, and the second part features more wide ranging thoughts on the intersections of STEM, art, and education.
About Me
For the last two years, I have been coaching a team of elementary and middle school kids to compete in the FLL competition tournament, with my daughter as one of the team members. Beyond that, I’ve been in academia for a while, with a doctorate in the history of art from UC Berkeley and a job as a university professor. A few years ago, when my then four-year-old daughter started playing with Legos, we started to make simple machines to learn about STEM things like physics, classical mechanics, geometry, and programming. Eventually, we gathered some of my daughters' friends together and organized meetings to train for the FLL competition.
About the FLL Team
We’re also recruiting for new FLL team members, ages 9 to 14, in the East Bay of California. Here’s a link to our website, where there’s more information about the team.
